President’s Message – Spring 2023

President’s Message – Spring 2023

Happy Easter! In this Easter season, we celebrate the joy found in the journey. We also celebrate community and faith that through the sacrifice of love, we improve each other’s lives. Ubuntu, a Nguni Bantu term meaning “humanity” and often translated as “I am because we are,” beautifully captures the essence of Nativity Prep. It is a philosophy that underscores the importance of togetherness, recognizing that we are all interconnected and that our well-being and success are inextricably linked to those around us. Here at Nativity Prep, we thrive on caring for one another, and by doing so, we transform the world for the better.

This month we celebrated our 8th-grade students’ acceptances to high school. The Class of 2023 has far exceeded expectations!

  • 100% of them were accepted to their first choice of high school, including a 100% acceptance rate to San Diego’s Catholic High Schools!
  • We celebrate growth! Upon entry to NPA as 6th-grade students, 67% of the class-tested below grade level in math and reading, some more than two grades below.
  • Today, 80% of the Class of 2023 are eligible for our Nativity Prep High School Scholarship program.
  • Next year, 80% will attend one of San Diego’s Catholic High Schools, and, most exciting, 100% will participate in Nativity Prep’s Graduate Support Program!

Despite challenges faced during the pandemic, this group of students has shown immense growth and commitment, now excelling academically. We are so proud of them, and I know you are too!

What makes Nativity Prep unique and special is our ongoing relationship with students and families throughout their educational journey through college. Therefore, 8th-grade graduation is not a goodbye but a celebration of new beginnings. We eagerly anticipate supporting the Class of 2023 in their high school endeavors and are confident that they will enrich their chosen school communities.

In a world where community is easily overlooked, the Ubuntu philosophy reminds us of our interconnectedness and strength in unity. As our students graduate this spring, they carry a community of faith and love. In the spirit of Ubuntu, we thank you for your invaluable contributions!

Ubuntu,

Jessica Hooper,
President
