We congratulate Ruben Ocampo (NPA ’11, The Bishop’s School ’15, SJSU ’19) as the 2015 recipient of the Adelante Scholarship. This special college-aid award was established last year, in 2014, by an anonymous benefactor of Nativity Prep and provides the recipient with comprehensive funding to cover four-year college tuition and housing costs, after costs for financial aid have been determined. The recipient must earn admission to and maintain excellent standing at an accredited four-year U.S. college or university beginning in the fall following his or her high school graduation.
Ruben is currently attending San Jose State as a freshman in the mechanical engineering program. “When I was looking into engineering programs in California, I was taken right away with the program (here) at SJSU,” said Ruben. “They have one of the best, if not the best, engineering program in the entire CSU system.
“My classes for the most part are small, except for my math and engineering lectures. My professors are great, easy to talk to, and accessible almost anytime, even beyond office hours,” Ruben shared via email recently. “Unfortunately, I haven’t had a lot of time for clubs or sports because of my schedule and work, but I have met amazing people,” he added.
Without the support that the Adelante Scholarship provides, enrolling at SJSU would have likely been a non-starter for Ruben and his family. “I am so grateful. It definitely took off a lot of pressure from my parents. They were willing to get a third job just so they could help pay for school, but, honestly, it would have been too much for them to handle.”
We are so proud of Ruben and all his accomplishments! As his 11-year journey continues, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for this bright scholar.
