High Accolades for NPA Students in Art Competition

This past October, two Nativity students earned recognition for their artwork at the annual Arts and Culture Fest sponsored by the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation in Southeast San Diego. Elsy Guzman, a student in our seventh-grade class (2013), and Angelica Vera, from our eighth-grade class (2012), won, respectively, the second-place award for mixed media (“Loneliness”), and the first-place award in the Drawing and Painting category (Untitled). Angelica Vera’s untitled drawing also won the People’s Choice award in the Mixed Media category.

Each year in the second semester, students in our sixth-grade class study photographic art and writing within a unique curriculum designed by Outside the Lens (OTL), a local non-profit devoted to arts and literacy education. Elsy Guzman’s designed her award-winning digital-media photographic work as part of her second-semester OTL studies as a sixth grader. Her work had also previously been part of a formal showing at the ARTS Center in Point Loma in May, 2011.

Angelica Vera was awarded a scholarship for Francis Parker School’s summer enrichment program for 2011, where she studied drawing and painting and produced her award-winning work.
