From college football to the Catholic faith, tradition and generosity have always been an integral part of the Notre Dame experience.
Since 2002, the Notre Dame Club of San Diego (NDSD) has carried on their annual generous tradition of providing Thanksgiving dinners for all 60+ Nativity Prep families.
“It’s something we love to do,” says Dr. Barney King, past President of NDSD and a current member. “We have a very generous alumni community here in San Diego, both those with the means to provide financial support and those with the time to help coordinate and deliver this project each year.”
A few months prior to the event, which has always taken place just a few days before Thanksgiving when students dismiss early to begin their long-awaited vacation with family and friends, NDSD solicits donations to help purchase turkeys and a box of condiments and side dishes for each Nativity family.
And the students and families appreciate very much NDSD’s efforts.
“We cannot say how grateful we are for the kindness and generosity of the Notre Dame volunteers who come every year to provide these gifts to us,” commented Mary Lopez, a Nativity parent. “They are great role models for us and for our children…giving so much for those in need at a time of the year when the need is greatest.”
Nativity’s President and Principal, Brendan Sullivan, reflected on his experience with NDSD over the years.
“Barney and his group of volunteers make this time of year such a special one for our families,” says Sullivan. “As a graduate of Boston College, given the rivalry between us (BC and Notre Dame), I used to be suspicious of their generosity,” he adds jokingly, “but in all truth I am humbled and very grateful for all they continue to do.”
NDSD remains committed to the Nativity Thanksgiving Dinners project each year by reaching out to local ND alumni to raise approximately $2500 annually to support the costs.
Initiated in 2002 through the efforts of David Rivera, Nativity Prep’s founder and a graduate of Notre Dame Law School, the event continues to generate a sense of community and generosity among and between NDSD and the families, students, and staff of Nativity Prep.
Part of the funding that NDSD raises covers the cost for a few extra meals for the Nativity Prep faculty.
“I’m very grateful for what they do,” commented Ms. Maite Urcaregui, a first-year teacher at Nativity through the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. “We (the JVC community) are planning a Christmas celebration in a few weeks, and the things they provided today will help make our Christmas get-together a really special event.”
All of us at Nativity—families and students, teachers and staff—appreciate NDSD’s ongoing commitment and generosity. Thank you!
