Ballet Folklorico

Nativity Prep strives to teach its students time management skills by having them become involved in various extracurricular activities while also managing their school work. Fostering an environment that supports and challenges them, time management is essential for Nativity Prep students as they prepare for college-prep high schools. For the Lazaro sisters, this means being dressed in colorful ribbons and tap shoes. For over eight years, Valerie (8th grade) and Camilla Lazaro (6th grade) have been perfecting Mexican regional dances alongside parents Mayra and Horacio Lazaro. For the past 2 years, the Lazaro family has been dancing with Ballet Folklorico Ti-Pai, since its opening. Alongside them are NPA 8th graders, Aaliyah Orozco, Rolayne Jimenez, Jimena Hernandez, and Evelyn Santos. “The beauty of being a part of this academy is that everyone is so welcoming and passionate. I love that it makes the girls want to connect and learn more about their culture,” states Mayro Lazaro.

Allowing the girls to partake in this productive activity has introduced them to an inclusive community that has taught them many life skills that will transfer to college and beyond. Their parents have witnessed growth within their students from all angles, “with having dance practice two to three times a week, the girls have had to learn how to keep up with all of their responsibilities.” This family activity has been more than just a hobby—it’s been a path to self-discovery, helping them push beyond their comfort zones. It’s shaped them into more confident, focused individuals, teaching them important life skills that will stay with them for years to come.
