Nativity Prep Academy to hold open house for prospective students

KUSI News (October 2022)

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Nativity Prep Academy is a private-independent, all-scholarship Catholic middle school and college-preparatory program for young men and women from low-income families who represent the first generation to graduate from college.

The school aims to break the cycle of generational poverty by developing their students’ and their families’ ability to live a life of opportunity, choice, and service.

Nativity Prep President, Jessica Hooper, students Pablo Villegas and Irene Levya, along with alumnus Adrian Alcazar, joined KUSI’s Lauren Phinney on Good Morning San Diego to share what the unique school has done for their lives, and encourage people to come to their open house to learn more about all the good they accomplish first-hand.

Nativity Prep Academy just recently purchased a new campus, allowing them to grow their school and welcome more students and mentors into their program.

Hooper explained that the goal for every Nativity Prep student is to graduate college. She says many of their students start at Nativity Prep around sixth grade, and stay connected with faculty and mentors through their college graduation day and beyond.

For example, Hooper said “shockingly, for first-generation students from historically under-resourced communities, only about 15% of those who start college, finish.”

Nativity Prep student Pablo Villegas said he is hoping to pursue a career in marketing or real estate.

Irene Levya, a seventh grader, said Nativity Prep is the “perfect school” for her and wants to be a teacher at Nativity Prep after graduating college.

Adrian Alcazar, who graduated from Nativity Prep, then from a private high school, and then from the University of California Merced with a degree in Management and Business Economics. Alcazar is now working in the front office of Nativity Prep helping them find students to follow his same journey of success.

The Open House will be held on Saturday, October 29th, from 9:00 AM to Noon.
